A confident attacking display saw England U17s kick-off their UEFA European Championship qualification with a resounding victory over Armenia in Yerevan.
A wonder goal from Fulham's Patrick Roberts, two from Adam Armstrong and a neat finish from Dominic Solanke saw the Young Lions run out 4-0 winners at the FFA Academy.
John Peacock's Young Lions started on attack, whipping several early balls into the danger zone but the hosts were only going to be able to hold out for so long - three minutes to be precise.
It was apparent from the outset that Jonjoe Kenny and Roberts were going to take some stopping down the right flank, and it was the pair that linked up for the opener.
Kenny fed the ball to Roberts out wide in the opposition half, and it was almost as if the wide-man had rockets in his boots as he shot forward, leaving the full back helpless as he cut inside once he'd reached the 18-yard line.
From there he unleashed an unstoppable left-foot strike that flew into the keeper's top-right corner.
Think of Cristiano Ronaldo's goal for Manchester United at Craven Cottage against Roberts' club and that will give you an idea of the top quality finish that the crowd witnessed in Yerevan.
Armenia were struggling to get out of their half as the Young Lions' quick, slick passing had them chasing shadows at times during the opening 20 minutes. They could have fallen even further behind had Armstrong firstly converted an Issy Brown cross, and then an overhead-kick that flew just wide of the upright after the striker had created the chance himself.
Armstrong was back amongst it again on 25 minutes, and he must have thought he had scored when he curled a beautiful free-kick from 25 yards over the wall and heading straight for the bottom corner. Somehow Suren Aloyan managed to get down low to palm the ball wide.
As the half continued Armenia were still finding it a struggle to mount any sort of effort on goal, and it was perhaps frustration creeping into the team that led to a succession of free-kicks, with midfielder Davit Martirosyan getting his name into the referee's book.
And if that wasn't bad enough, a cruel twist was in store as England were to double their advantage, albeit deservedly, in fortuitous circumstances in the 31st minute.
Brown was released down the left, and the big forward powered through the defence towards the byline before firing the ball into the danger zone and into a melee of bodies. The Armenian defence were caught in a panic, and as a centre-half went to clear, he struck the ball directly into Armstrong and it rebounded into the net from six-yards out.
Jordan Rossiter picked up a caution shortly before the break which was to be the only down side of a dominant first-half display, which should have been even more emphatic had Armstrong connected with a Brown cross five yards out. But John Peacock will have been happy enough with the scoreline and performance.
Attempting to get back into the game, Armenia introduced Mikhail Martirosyan into the midfield at the interval and striker Robert Minasyan shortly after, and they did manage to get their first efforts on goal, but both long-rangers failed to trouble Dean Henderson in the England net.
Looking to add to their tally, Armstrong thundered a right-footed drive just over from 30 yards and the impressive Kenny also sent a whizzing long-range shot just over.
Obviously a striker in confidence, Armstrong continued on his hunt for goals, curling a free-kick narrowly wide after a Martirosyan foul, for which he was booked. Three Lions defender Tom Brewitt would also pick up a caution before the match was out for a strong challenge on the half way line.
Peacock introduced Seyi Ojo, Isaac Christie Davies and Dominic Solanke into the fold to freshen his side up and it was to be the latter who made the biggest impact as he played a key role in the last two goals, but not before a scare for England.
Midfielder Hayk Galstyan, who has recently been on trial at Atletico Madrid, collected possession out wide on the right, and similar to Roberts' early strike, he darted forward and hit a curling 25-yard effort which left keeper Henderson with no chance, but to the home crowd's despair, it cannoned back off the crossbar.
Any hopes of a dramatic comeback were quickly extinguished though thanks to Solanke. He showed electric reflexes to leave the defence standing and meet a pass around eight yards out, and he cooly dinked it over the onrushing goalie to make it 3-0.
With just seconds remaining Solanke then turned provider for Armstrong to grab his second in an almost identical goal to that only moments before. Just reward for the Newcastle United forward's perseverance and persistence.
